Never Used Wallpaper before?
Moving into a new house this September and one of the rooms is painted black and red. I don’t mind the black so much but the red bothers me. I expect that its going to be hard to cover so I found some amazing wallpaper through urban outfitters. I think it would look amazing with the black walls. What should I expect with wallpaper? Is it difficult to put on?
First time – probably, it depends on how ‘handy’ you are. It is as difficult or easy as your skills but experience does help. If you want to get some experience before chancing your skills on this amazing paper then buy and hang a lining paper. This will help to cover the red paint, give you a smooth surface for your better paper and avoid the risk of the wallpaper paste softening the paint so you end up with smears over your good paper. If you do this then you need to mark your drop line halfway across the width. This means that when you hang your top paper the seams are not in the same place and gives you a smoother finish. In truth for the better finish your lining paper should go horizontally but I think that that is a bit too much to ask at the mo!

Different wallpapers have different qualities so it is difficult to be specific about any problems you can expect with the paper you intend to hang but….
Work out what preparation work you need to do and do it before you start. You need a sturdy pasting table. Make sure that you have a good bucket in which to mix the paste and a paddle to mix it with (a long handled wooden spoon will do). The correct paste for the paper you are hanging. A good pasting brush. Wallpaper scissors. Plenty of dry rags. A smoothing brush or sponge. A seam roller is useful but not entirely necessary. Dust sheets to cover any carpet or to keep your paper off any bare boards
Before you start you need to assess where the light is coming from. When paper a flat wall you would normally work from the corner nearest to the window so that sunlight does not throw up shadows if there is any overlap of paper. If the wall has a feature such as a chimney breast you work from the centre of that. If the room has two windows then work from the one that catches the morning sun, this is the strongest.
Once you have decided where you are going to start the first thing you need to do is make sure that when you do hang it your paper goes on straight. To this end you need a plumb-line and sinker – a weight tied onto one end of a long piece of string, a pencil and a measuring tape or rule (and a partner if you have one). Now measure in and make a mark a half inch less than the width of your paper just above floor level, eye level and just below ceiling height, so one of you will need to be able to climb ladders. Because very few walls are straight these marks may not form a vertical line.
From ceiling level, release the weight and let the string slide through your fingers until the weight is just above the floor but still hanging free. Hold your piece of string just proud of the wall so that it is not catching on anything and check that it passes over the mark nearest to your starting point. With everything in position, draw a line on the wall parallel to the string. When you hang your first drop this is the line you will use as a guide.
Wallpaper is usually rolled so that the pattern runs away from the open edge. When measuring always make sure you know which is the top. It would be a tragedy to get all the way round and find out that the third drop is upside down. To measure the first length, place the roll on the floor then climb the ladders until you can reach the ceiling. Lay the paper against the wall and draw up enough to have at least two inches spare. Now get your partner to mark the bottom edge + two inches – or carefully walk down the ladder, making sure that the paper does not slip from its place on the wall and mark it yourself.
Carefully lift the paper and its roll onto the pasting table, fold back and crease at your bottom mark. Fingers crossed and cut. If your paper is plain and you are sure that the room is not four inches shorter at one side than the other, yo can cut all the lengths you need against the length you have just cut. If the paper is patterned you will have to cut as you go along.
Lay the first length of paper face down on the table and carefully cover it with paste working in a cross motion from the middle to the outside. Now leave that to soak whilst paste the wall – this makes the surface slippy so that you can slide the paper into the correct position.
Now go back up the ladder with the paper hung by its folds over one arm. Unfold the top and place paste against paste. Slide the paper so that it lines up with the line you drew earlier and press it gently into place so that it overlaps the corner by about half an inch and the ceiling by about 2 inches.
