Any tips or “rules” for effectively mixing florals and stripes?
Are there any “rules” or tips for mixing floral and stripe patterns into your home decor? I just repainted my room a very soothing sage green and stumbled upon a floral wallpaper border that looks amazing with the new wall color. I’d like to incorporate a complimentary stripe pattern into my bedding but have no idea how to choose a pattern that will work. The main colors I am working with are sage green, soft pastel green, pale yellow and light blue. I’m usually very confident when it comes to decorating but this one has me stumped. Besides coordinating the colors in both patterns, are there any other tips when trying to tastefully match the two?
I love your colors and I too love to mix florals, stripes, and plaids. I think besides matching the colors you need to be aware of scale. In other words, the size of the patterns. A tiny floral would look best with a pinstipe but not with a wide, bold stripe. I’ve done this in my bedroom (a little). My walls are blue, my comforter is cream but my dust ruffle is a bold floral with blues, greens, beiges and a little red. I used the three basic colors: blue, beige and green on my windows in a stripe. I added pillows with floral patterns, plaids and some plain( one is all blue with beige fringe and one red flower on it) to pick up all the colors. You’ll know what works when you put them together and what doesn’t. Experiment. Good luck!

If possible, paint the walls especially for winter months. Go through the color swatch and choose the brightest color that suits your taste. Those who cannot afford painting the walls can use wallpapers to make the walls colorful. All living room items starting from utensils to pelmets – everything should reflect colors.
Add fragrance and more colors with Flowers
Flowers add new dimensions to the interior. Make it a point in your decor ideas that you have to buy bouquets from florists to make the interior cheerful and dazzling. Apart from adding colors, flowers fill your home with heavenly smells. Be sure to use scented and dazzling flowers only.
Add more fragrance with scented candles
Candles are very sweet. Buy some colorful and scented candles for your home. If you have a knack for crafting, try your hand with candle making this winter. Involve your kids in the process too. It will be a family fun that everybody would enjoy for sure.
And Let There Be Light
Right light at the right moment makes everything extraordinary! And you need plenty of light to get out of the winter blues. Replace your existing sources of light and shift to a brighter source. Use attractive light shades made of colored and textured glasses to make it warm and summery.
Retouch your Kitchen and Bath
And finally, remodeling your living room won’t be of much help. You have to redesign your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen before winter. Let there be colors and let there be light everywhere. Get ready for the cold days esthetically and celebrate winter!

Does the decor of the interior need to match the style of the home?
My Mom’s house is a dark-brown stained one story contemporary with a garage on the front (yuck!) and a skylight in the living room. I am confused about helping her redecorate b/c the person who built it has everything from a fancy chandelier in the entry way to chair rails, floral wallpaper, and a wood-panelled den. How do I know what style is best for redecorating? Should a home that is contemporary on the outside also be so inside?
It is nice to decorate in the style of the home. There is a continuity of flow throughout. Many people however do not. They dress there homes in a style with which they are comfortable. It would be off to see a Victorian home decorated in an Asian design but whatever floats your boat I suppose.
