What is wrong with my Mac Powerbook?
So, I just got this Mac Powerbook (about 4 years old) from my friend who got a brand new mac. She already had all the applications I needed on it (like iTunes and firefox). Here’s the weird thing: whenever I restart my computer, something’s always different. It always replaces my wallpaper with apple’s default background, there are always different icons on the dock, and more recently, my entire iTunes library was just gone!(it asked me if I agree to the terms of use – as if I was starting it for the first time). The apple mail client also didn’t remember my account info, and I had to redo this as well. Firefox also cleared all my bookmarks. Although this might have been my fault because there was some kind of “firefox drive” on my desktop and I right-clicked and hit ‘eject firefox.’ So, why does my mac do this? I don’t want to keep having these restarts from hell, so should I wipe the hard drive and start all over?

I’d backup all my personal files, then use the original restore discs that came with the laptop, and build up back from scratch. Yes its slow and painful, but it should help resolve a lot of issues you’re having.
But, if you want to try and just see if you can do anything else, without resorting to that, there’s a couple more things to try.
First go into your Applications folder and the Utilities sub-folder. Fire up the Disk Utility application. On the list on the left click on your hard drive. Then run the Repair Permissions command.
Next, Google and download something called Mac Janitor. Its free. Run that on your system.
Now shut down the computer completely. On reboot, hold down option-command-p-r (all 4, be quick). Keep holding all keys down until you hear the start up chime twice. After the second chime let go of all keys and let it boot up normally.
Some of that might help remove some cobwebs and clear stuff up for you. If you’re still running into lots of problems, then I would consider the full re-install for sure. It might just be that your friend has used it so much its got a bit cluttered and needs to be completely reset.
