The Incredible History and Product of Hublot Watches
Many people are attracted to Hublot timepieces for their beauty, comfort and elite quality. Much of what makes this brand so unique and desired is the fascinating history of the company. As with most entrepreneurial ventures, Hublot started with a need for change and innovation. Hublot’s story is an inspiring one of risk, change, growth and reward.
Carlo Crocco left Briel watchmaking with the Italian Binda Group in 1976, moved to Switzerland and founded the innovative Swiss watch brand. Hublot was launched in 1980. Hublot took the market by storm and in a few short years, was counted among the world’s leading watchmaking brands. The unique design of the timepieces took 3 years to research and perfect but the product was well worth the wait. Carlo Crocco took a pretty substantial risk in separating from the Italian Binda Group to peruse his own creative potential and that risk paid off, big time.
In May of 2004, Jean-Claude Biver was named CEO of Hublot. Jean-Claude Biver has contributed many ideas for developing the brand. By 2006, just two years later, his ideas and marketing skills had quadrupled sales! Biver defines his marketing strategy as “concentration in diversity”, meaning going where the potential clients are. He advocates investing a lot of energy in sponsoring and partnership in various fields. One of the most significant contributions he made was relaunching “The Art of Fusion”. He loved the idea of the original watch, designed with gold and natural rubber. Jean-Claude Biver took the idea further to encompass Swiss watches made with gold and ceramic, tantalum and red gold, magnesium and titanium, etc. The fusion concept has been a huge success for the Swiss watchmaking brand but still, 30% of demand remains with the classic design. In 2006 Hublot TV was launched. This was the first ever internet television channel for luxury brand news.
Carlo Crocco sold Hublot to LVMH, a world-leading French luxury goods group, in April of 2008. The group has wisely kept Jean-Claude Biver’s brilliant marketing mind on board as CEO. The same year, Hublot designed it’s first timepiece for women. The women’s watch has a similar face but with a slimmer, more elegant rubber wrist-band. Due to the elite-nature of these beautiful Swiss watches, there is a lot of demand on the market for Hublot counterfeits. At BaselWorld, in 2009, Hublot introduces a way of detecting these counterfeit watches. It’s called a WiseKey smart card. The smart card authenticates watches on Hublot’s servers.
This Swiss watch brand almost immediately drew the attention of royal families across the world and soon to follow, many popular public figures would be seen wearing these gorgeous timepieces. Celebrities who have been photographed donning Hublot watches include Nelson Mandela, Lionel Richie, Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Rodriguez, Rihanna, Cheryl Cole and 50 Cent. That is just to name a few, the list goes on.
What really sets Hublot watches apart from other Swiss watches and luxury timepieces in general, is that each watch is crafted with rare materials. Hublot watches are described as a fusion of traditional Swiss watchmaking and modern watchmaking art. The first watch, designed by Crocco, was made with gold and natural rubber. The rubber used is quite innovative and is said to regenerate over time when in contact with skin. The name, Hublot, is derived after the French word for port-hole. These timepieces are distinguished by port-hole shaped watch cases, simplistic black dial and the black rubber strap. Upon order, each strap is tailor fitted to the purchaser’s wrist for the most comfortable watch experience.
Hublot watches and Jean-Claude Biver have been universally recognized for their brilliant work and innovation. In 2007, Biver was named Best Watchmaking Manager and Best Communicator in survey of watchmaking journalists in Business Montres magazine. Also, he earned 5th place in Entrepreneur of the Year by Handleszeitung, a Swiss economic weekly publication. In 2008, he was named CEO of the year at Jewellery and pens Awards in Bahrain and 2008 Leader of the Year by the Swiss PME magazine. Jean-Claude Biver also claimed the title 2009 Man of the Year by magazines Orologi da Polso, Revue des mounters, GMT and Business Montres. Hublot watches’ 2005 awards include Design Prize in the Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie, Sports Watch Prize at the Watch of the Year ceremony in Japan and Best Oversized Watch of the Editor’s Choice Watch of the Year in Bahrain. Later, the Big Bang design won Best Watch of the Design Awards 2007 from Wallpaper Magazine. The One million $ Big Bang won Prize for the Jewel Watch at the Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie 2007. Mag Bang was awarded Best Technological Innovation in Bahrain. Ceramic Gold Big Bang won Best Watch by Caesar magazine. Big Bang Purple Carat was awarded second prize in Ladies Watch category at the 6th Nuit de l’Horlogerie in Gevena and it also won Ladies Watch at the Jewellery and pens Awards in Bahrain and Ladies Chronograph in Reveue des Montres in Paris.
